When morning rolls around it is so tempting to hit the snooze and go right on dreaming. Lately I’ve not been eating healthy or exercising, and the biggest result of this is feeling so tired. I know what I need to do, but doing it is harder than we think! Issues with food and body image are all over the internet these days. This isn’t an article on weight or exercise. It is about another type of exercise, one that I’ve found takes just as much effort.
“Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.” – Max Lucado
Although I’m not perfect, I feel like I’m getting better about getting up early and spending tie in prayer. Sure, I would like to be getting up even earlier, but having 15-20 minutes to just pray, has been one of the best decisions of my life right now.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn about prayer this last year I’ve been living out this exercise in my own life is my prayers are very weak and that’s ok. My new favorite quote on prayer is the above one by Max Lucado. My exercise routine for my body needs a restart, but my prayer life does as well. My perfectionist ways would look at my prayer life and see where I need to improve. Perfectionism has paralyzed me with my prayer life. My prayer life is not dependent on my “doing it right.”
What is the right way to pray anyway?
There isn’t one. Prayer is simply talking to God, so why do I complicated it with journals, pens, and the perfect space? God doesn’t ask for perfection, He simply asks I pray. So as I move forward in developing a prayer habit, I am hanging on to these NINE TRUTHS about prayer to help me keep going!
1. God is Listening (Psalm 16)
2. Jesus is Our Great High Priest (Hebrews 7:24-25)
3. The Holy Spirit Lives Inside Us (I Corinthians 3:16)
4. God is Merciful and Kind (Psalm 145:8)
5. Payer Requires Faith (Matthew 21:22)
6. Prayer is Meant to Change us (Psalm 119:26-27)
7. Prayer is a way to Pour Out Our Soul to God (I Samuel 1:15)
8. Prayer is. Way to Draw Near to God (Psalm 73:28)
9. God Answers Prayer (Psalm 3:4; Psalm 4:1; Psalm 28:6; James 5:16-18)
Which of these truths will you hold on today as you move forward in prayer? As I type this, I need to remember number five and six. I want prayer to be more than just words I write or say, I want to see CHANGE in my life. I also want to stop just listing things to pray for, but really pour out my soul to God and let Him know my deepest hurts, fears, and hopes.
