What Does Hope Really Mean?
What does hope really mean? ……. Gentle rocking a newborn to sleep this morning I gazed at my coffee cup. It was filled halfway with cold coffee. In the middle of my desk is my prayer journal. With only a few words written at the top and an incomplete sentence I gazed at the unfinished tasks before me. The “to-do” list from yesterday remains all unchecked. I just change the date at the top for today’s date. Wondering if I’ll even get to these things, a silent sigh escaped my mouth. Then God nudged my soul with this truth:
This is your life and it is good.
I remembered that the tiny infant I was baby-sitting, who interrupted my morning routine is my life right now. The things I think are inconveniences are actually the very things God uses to mold me and soften me. The college girl who would get up an hour early before classes to read her Bible and pray is buried beneath the tired mom of five who is babysitting a newborn. Every morning the alarm clock goes off just in time for me to get up, take a shower, and sip a half a cup of coffee while packing lunches and signing planners.
By the time I can breathe in the mornings the baby needs fed and I’ve only sat down for a few minutes to pray. Then I remember: God’s promises are not for when I am refreshed and renewed they are for when I am worn and weary. His truth is for this moment. And THIS is my hope.
What Does It Really Mean?
You see, it is more than a verb. It is not something I do. It is not…..
I hope I can get up early.
I hope the toddlers sleeps in.
I hope the girls are not fighting.
I hope I can pay the bills.
I hope I can find a job.
I hope my sister gets better.
I hope…..something in my life goes my way.
It is waking up and realizing that God is faithful. In this moment it is a noun. It is more than wish. It is a choice I make to place my trust in something. Do I trust the circumstances? Or do I trust the God ordaining the circumstances?
When the job is lost and I can’t find work……how can I have hope in the future?
When the baby doesn’t sleep….can I still believe God is going to give me strength?
When the bills go unpaid….do I know God provides?
Do I hope in God?
Many of the times I find myself without it, in the pit of despair is because I’ve lost sight of God. It may seem like He disappoints because we suffer. Anxiety, children lost, hurts, death, cancer, and heartache abound so where is God and how can we hope in Him?
Peter says we have a living hope (I Peter 1:5), David says we can praise God as we trust in Him (Psalm 42:11), and Isaiah says we will have new strength for each day (Isaiah 40:31). Paul reminds us that it will produce joy and peace through the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13) and the author of Hebrews says we can hope in God because “He who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23)
Look up friend. It is not in the empty hands of all of your dreams that died. Hope is in the eyes of the Savior who loves you, died for you, and is working it all (even the hard things) for your good.
Hope again in God. He is faithful.
