How to Get Started with Prayer
We all know we need to do it. We all put it off. We all say we want to “be better” at it. But we don’t take steps to get better, to start, or to continue. What am I talking about?
I’ll be the first to admit I struggle in this area – maybe you do too. Developing a prayer life isn’t easy. It will (and has) taken time to keep going. But it is worth it. I want to leave you with this quote by one of my favorite devotional writers, Oswald Chambers:
Prayer does not fit us for the great works; prayer is the great work.
What you have embarked on, after this course, is so important. Not just for yourself, but your family, friends, and co-labors in Christ. Paul says in I Thessalonians 5:17: Pray without ceasing. Where do we begin? The first step is this: make prayer a priority.
Are you going to make prayer a priority? How will you do it? Will you get up early? Will you start a prayer journal? How long will you pray? Where will you pray? Answering these questions will help keep prayer a priority in your life for days, weeks, months, and years to come.
The want-to, however, needs to start with YOU. Just decided, each day, to make prayer a priority!
Finding time to pray begins with planning. It continues with intentional action. It changes our lives and hearts as we allow God to speak to us during those quiet times. Your life doesn’t have to be quiet for your heart and mind to be at rest. Choose to pray. Choose to listen. Choose to seek.
Jesus says to you, dear friend, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
A burden is something that is carried. That’s it. It is something that we take with us and move through life with beside us. Let us take the burden of prayer on our backs in peace, knowing it is light. Jesus promises true rest.
I believe that because I am in a season of BUSY. Many times we say we cannot devote our time to prayer because we are too busy. No. Let me say this: you are never too busy. It is about prioritizing. I will ask you one question I have to ask myself every single morning I’m tempted to get up and start my day off without God and prayer. This is the question:
What is most important?
Ask yourself that question today. We will never find the time for prayer, we must make the time for prayer.
If you would like me to walk with you to help you cultivate a prayer life, check out my course. I recorded nine sessions and wrote a thirty-page notebook to help you cultivate a growing prayer life. You will find the answers to these questions:
“How do I make prayer a priority when my life is on the spin cycle?”
“How can I know God is listening?”
“Help! What do I do when I can’t focus long enough to pray?”
“Where do I even start?”
“What is the best way to stay consistent?”
My goal is to help you:
• Feel empowered in your prayer life.
• Know how to create and use a prayer journal
• Know exactly what to pray
• Learn how to cut distractions and stay focused
• Believe prayer is doable (no mountain climbing required)
