How the Bible Gives Us Hope

How the Bible Gives Us Hope

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,

And in His word I do hope.

Psalm 130:5

Gently rocking a newborn to sleep one morning I gazed at my coffee cup. It was filled halfway with cold coffee. In the middle of my desk is my prayer journal. With only a few words written at the top and an incomplete sentence I gazed at the unfinished tasks before me. The “to-do” list from yesterday remains all unchecked. I just change the date at the top for today’s date. Wondering if I’ll even get to these things, a silent sigh escaped my mouth. Then God nudged my soul with this truth:

This is your life and it is good.

Don’t wait until “life gets better.” Hope today. I remembered that the tiny infant I was baby-sitting, who interrupted my morning routine was my life right then.  Today, the things I think are inconveniences are actually the very things God uses to mold me and soften me. The college girl who would get up an hour early before classes to read her Bible and pray is buried beneath the tired mom of five.

During those days, the morning the alarm clock would go off just in time for me to get up, take a shower, and sip a half a cup of coffee while packing lunches and signing planners. By the time I could breathe in the mornings, the baby needed fed again and I had only sat down for a few minutes to pray. It was in those moments I would remember: God’s promises are not for when I am refreshed and renewed they are for when I am worn and weary.

His truth is for this moment. And THIS is my hope. God’s WORD is my hope. Just take a look at this amazing verses in which God proves His faithfulness:

Deuteronomy 7:9 – “Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God  who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”

2 Timothy 2:13 – “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.”

Psalm 33:4 – “For the Word of the Lord is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness.”

Psalm 91:4 – “He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.”

2 Thessalonians 3:3  – “The Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.”

1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

1 Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

Psalms 119:90 – “Your faithfulness endures to all generations;  you have established the earth, and it stands fast.”

Exodus 34:6 – “Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth.”

1 Corinthians 1:9 – God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Hebrews 10:23 – “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”

Hope is a funny thing. It is a deep seated belief that God will come through for us. That is why the Bible is our hope. It reminds us of all of the ways God has already come through for us. And it gives us the truth we need to trust He will continue to come through for us again.

The Bible is our hope.
