Coming to the Word Expecting

Coming to the Word Expecting

The past week has been tough. I’ve felt down, a little wonky and weird. I’m in limbo with a lot of my work. We are finishing up school. Usually I’m in the middle of planning next year’s curriculum and getting everything lined up so we can enjoy the summer. We are now halfway through July and we have zero books for next year, and I haven’t planned a thing!

We miss our pool, our friends, and the slower pace of life back home. Here I am – in the messy middle. The year 2020 has not turned out anything like we expected, did it? We didn’t have any medical teams visit us nor were we able to open the surgical center like we had planned. Our Spanish lessons are all weird because of the virus and our teacher, whom we loved, was laid off.

The messy middle for sure. The only thing that has kept me sane is my Bible reading. I’m doing this Bible Reading Challenge and it has been a saving grace. It is very easy and doable. We are reading the New Testament this summer. The other day, as I was reading a very familiar passage in Philippians, something stood out to me. It was something I had read one hundred times, but that day it was new, fresh, and just what my heart needed. On another day while I was reading I read some verses I had never noticed. They were all new to me.

That’s the beauty of coming to God’s word expecting. It is not a book of rules but a living Word which continues the very words of God. Expect.

Expect. Go to the Bible expecting God to show up. He is truly alive and His word lives. It is alive and no matter how many times you’ve read a verse, you can read it again today and see it with fresh eyes. Expect God to speak to your heart. What is in your heart?

If there is sin, expect Him to convict.

If there is guilt, expect forgiveness.

If there is weariness, expect strength.

If there is fear, expect courage.

If there is sorrow, expect comfort.

If there is confusion, expect direction.

If there is thirsty, expect to be satisfied.

If there is hunger, expect to be filled.

God’s Word is not meant to be read like a novel or “easy-reading.” His word is deeper, richer, fuller, and more than we could ever imagine. Go to his word today. Soak it up. No matter how long it’s been. Begin today.
