A Bible Reading Plan for Psalm 119

Do you need a Bible reading plan for Psalm 119? It is the longest chapter in the Bible!

My favorite book in college was Pride and Prejudice. The characters, the story, the time period, and the transformations fascinated me. My entire English 101 class focused on studying this classic by Jane Austin. I had read the book in high school and thought I knew it pretty well. As I worked my way through the book more slowly for the class, I realized there was more to the story than a love triangle. In our class we wrote papers, discussed themes, dove into the characters, and debated the meanings behind certain scenes. I thought I knew Pride and Prejudice before this class, but as I dove deeper I realized I loved it more. There was deeper heartache when Elizabeth rejected Darcy and joy as she walked along the grounds of her estate at the end. When the pride was humbled and prejudices brought to light, I saw myself in both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. So the words on the page wrote my story, not just the story of Jane Austin or even of Elizabeth Bennett. 

So it has been with God’s Word. The author of Psalm 119 didn’t just have a head knowledge of God’s word, he had a heart knowledge. At first glance Psalm 119 seems daunting and repetitive. Honestly, how can someone say they love God’s word? We get it. You love God’s Word. But if we look deeper it will change us. 

Can I encourage you to maybe read this beautiful psalm with fresh eyes? Look closer to the words he uses, take note of the change of his tone in each section. You might not know this, but Psalm 119 was written like an acrostic poem in the original Hebrew language. Each section begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. There is depth here in this psalm and you can be changed.

As the author reveals his own love for God’s word we are drawn into this love ourselves. To find ourselves in the pages is the reason we stop and dig deeper.
