How to Get Rid of Anxiety: A Free Devotional

What happens when the test comes back?

What happens when we move?

What happens when we need care for our parents?

What happens if one of them gets hurt?

What happens if they don’t sleep?

What happens if death comes? When death comes?

What happens if they say you can’t come to work for them?

I voiced the silent enemy. I said I know you are there, but I will not give in. The power it held over me began to loosen. My tremor stopped. The tightness remained, but it turned into an ache; a sore, deep inside. I didn’t find bold courage that night, just a spark. But once kindled, a spark will spread if it is fueled. For something to be kindled, it must start somewhere. Courage needs only a spark. But, then it needs tending to. For courage to turn into a blazing bonfire, destroying our fear, we must start small. Start simple and keep at it.

We have what we need for courage in the words of Scripture. But, God’s Word is not just a book to explain right and wrong. God cannot be found in a set of doctrines or a list of rules.

God is found in relationships. And He is the one inviting. I’ve been amazed at the purity of the Psalmists. They talk a lot about fear, but they also talk about financial issues, marriage, friendship, depression, and anxiety. In some ways, all of those things can cause us to be afraid. So how do the Psalmists react WHEN (not if…) life was hard or unknown?

They praised God for Who He is.

A shield.

A sword.

A refuge.

A fortress.

A comforter.

So how do we find God in the midst of all these complex issues? By learning truth. This truth is found in the Bible. Here are five things the Bible says about how to battle anxiety based on Psalm 63. Get Rid of Anxiety by….

1. Seeking God

Read: Psalm 63:1-2

Reflect: How can I seek God? What does the word seek imply? Where is God found?

2. Praising God

Read: Psalm 63:3-4

Reflect: When we are in the desert, it is hard to praise God because we are so consumed with our circumstances. Why can we praise God, even when He is silent? How can we praise God in these seasons of anxiety?

3. Being Satisfied with God

Read: Psalm 63:5-8

Reflect: How is God described in this section? What do these characteristics show us about what He will do for us? How will God satisfy us, even when our soul’s our dry and thirsty?

4. Meditating on God’s Word

Read: Psalm 63:5-8

Reflect: In the beginning of the psalm, David says he seeks God early in the morning. In this section, when does David seek God? Why would it be important to seek God both in the morning and evening? How does God “hold us” when we meditate on His Word?

5. Letting God Defeat the Fear

Read: Psalm 63:9-11

Reflect: At the end of this psalm, what does David ask of the Lord? How will the enemies be destroyed? What battle or enemy has you in this place of wilderness? Why could David rejoice, even when he was still in the desert? He let God win! God will fight our battles.
