Spring is just around the corner. The birth of new life and green leaves stir in us thoughts of the resurrection. As my heart grows older, I found myself drawn to winter instead. The gray branches with a dusting of snow and the cold sky don’t seem to hold much promise at first.
One day I read how trees still grow in the winter. I must have missed that lesson in school long ago. The branches look dead and the trunk is worn with old bark, but under the frozen soil the roots continue to spread. The reason the leaves fall off and the branch go bare is because all of the nutrients from the soil, sun, and water are being pulled into the roots. Growth happens deep under the ground during winter.
The picture of growth in winter has me falling in love with the coldest season of the year. The promise of winter is this: Winter isn’t not an empty season. Winter holds so much promise, especially when we hold on to the promise with praise on our lips. Growth is happening. In the dark God works the best. So hold on to Him during the winter. Hold on to the truth that even if you let go of God will still hold you.
Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.Psalm 36:5
That is the hope of winter and the promise of hidden growth. God is still faithfulness when we can’t see the sun. God is still faithful. I know I talk a lot about God’s faithfulness, but over and over again I’ve seen Him come through for me. During the seasons of winter, it is so easy to lose sight of it all.
Why plant seeds? Why continue to read the Bible when we feel no warmth? The fire is gone when we listen to music? Nothing may come of Bible study. We may pray and pray Anxiety might still plague us at night, but winter’s promise is this: God is still faithful.
Look at all of these scriptures which speak of God’s faithfulness. Can one of these be your winter promise?
