Meeting God in Ordinary Moments
It started when my children were small and our world was so busy with things to do and then I began homeschooling. My days filled as we added each child. Activities. Naps. Mealtimes and bedtimes. I used to think life would slow down when my children got older.
It hasn’t.
The toys have mostly disappeared, but the dishes still pile up in the sink. The grocery list is just as long. If not longer! My calendar is full of appointments instead of playdates. I still fold laundry, answer emails, make dinner, and drive someone somewhere almost every day.
The routines have changed, but ordinary life is still…ordinary.
And I’ve realized something beautiful. God isn’t waiting for extraordinary moments to meet with me. He’s been present in the ordinary all along. It is beautiful and wonderful to think that God is with me each day. Every ordinary day is a day that makes up a life. My life is filled with days of routine and non-important activities. I try to keep a log of our simple pleasures as a family, knowing that time is moving fast and I’ll forget these details.
What I want to remember as well is God’s presence with me in the simple days. The normal, busy, chaotic, and even ordinary days. Each day is an opportunity for me to invite God into my life.
One day at a time
If you want to build a faithful life, begin one day at a time. Daily routines of meeting with God have been built over the past twenty years of being married and having children. There are countless moments, forgotten times when I felt small, invisible, and unimportant. But those moments brought me to God.
Looking back, I can’t remember most of the ordinary Tuesdays that filled my life. But I believe God remembers every one of them. None of those quiet acts of faithfulness were ever unnoticed by Him.
In God I find that my days matter – even the non-eventful days! Psalm 90 is one of my favorite psalms. It inspired my book, I Didn’t Sign Up for This. But the verses that speaks to me the most on this ordinary, “boring” days are verses 12 and 14:
So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
The ordinary isn’t the interruption to our walk with God. It’s where most of our walk with God actually happens.
My days look so different now, but God is still present. Moses says in Psalm 90:12, “Number our days…”
Notice it doesn’t say to number our big moments, our vacations, or our milestones. It says days. Ordinary Tuesdays. Ordinary September. That’s where God meets with us. Each day counts. This is not a warning, but a promise. He is not saying that we should achieve greatness because one day our lives will be cut off. Moses says that each day, every day, even the non-important days, matter in God’s kingdom.
Psalm 90:14 reminds us that God will be our satisfaction each morning and we can rejoice in his steadfast love everyday. Small moments matter – no matter the stage of life!
God is present in the ordinary rhythms of everyday life.
