{Part 4} When You Don’t Know Where to Go

Part 2 of a 4 Part Series entitled The God Who Knows

The God Who Knows The Way

Search me, O God, and know my heart;

Try me, and know my anxieties;

And see if there is any wicked way in me,

And lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24

I know my husband loves sweets. Any and all things made with sugar are his favorite. But his absolute favorite is yellow cake with chocolate icing. Last month, I asked him what dessert he wanted for his birthday. I told him I would (attempt) to make anything he liked. He looked at me and said: yellow cake with chocolate icing.

I didn’t even have to make the cake from strath. Betty Crocker and milk chocolate icing from a can was all he wanted. I laughed, because I knew he would choose that. I know him. I know my husband, after almost twelve years of marriage.

I also know he doesn’t like to ask for directions. Typical of most men, but mine is really bad about just “driving around” until we find what we are looking for. So many times I have no idea where we are going, but I trust his driving. He as a really good sense of direction, and a photographic memory. It always amazes me. He only needs to go to a place once and then he can always get there again.

I’ve loved getting to know my husband over the years. And it has taken time to get to know him in all his intricacies. I’m always astounded that God already knows ALL about me.

The knowledge God has of us, is deeper than we could ever imagine. He knows our secrets. He knows our death day. He knows the sin we harbor. God sees it all.

I don’t know about you, but if my husband knew ALL about me, I’d cringe. There are parts I wouldn’t want him to see. I’d be embarrassed and ashamed. God sees it all. In fact, David asked God to search him. David opened his heart to God, inviting God into his life. David sought a relationship with God. A personal, deep, intimate, relationship.

The beautiful thing is, David knew the truth about letting God into our hearts. God doesn’t enter into a relationship with us because He wants to condemn us or control us. God the Father wants to lead us into the “way everlasting.” The lasting road is one where we find our purpose. This is not the “path to heaven” but a path where we journey in life through faith and righteousness.

From the beginning of the world God sent forth a way of godliness and faith. It was disrupted by sin in the Garden of Eden, but God still invites people to this way! When you don’t know where to go, trust the driver.

Just like my husband on an old country road, I need to just trust God’s knowledge of me. I need to believe God is leading my life in a way that will give Himself glory and bring goodness to me.

Sometimes the goodness comes after a season of hard, but sweetness can be found there too. I wrote this a couple of years ago, and it still rings true:

He {God} didn’t change my circumstances; He changed my perspective. In Psalm 81, the Israelites had abandoned God. God couldn’t bless them, but if they returned, God promised to provide, out of their hard situation.

“But he {GOD} would feed you {His people} with the finest of the wheat,

and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” Psalm 81:16

For the people of Israel, it was a time of wilderness living. A time of spiritual doubting and daily hardship. And that was me. I doubted so much about God during our first year home. Was God still good? Was this part of His plan? I doubted whether we had made the right decision for our family. In Psalm 81:16, God looked at the rocky lives of His people, and He said, Out of these hard places I will satisfy you with honey. Honey is used for a sweetener and for healing. God promised them sweetness and healing, even in the midst of hard circumstances. In the middle of my day, I needed a reminder that something sweet would come from this hard season. I couldn’t wait any longer before I felt joy, love, and peace again. I didn’t want to wait for life to be normal. Normal was no longer a possibility.

Maybe you are struggling with adoption. Infertility. Cancer. Chronic pain. Job loss. Grief. Loneliness. Marriage. Don’t wait for a season of normal—look for peace today. It is in the ordinary we find the glory of God. He is in the small things, the daily things.  He is where we are. Our lives center around the 24-hour period. He is in our hours, minutes, and even the seconds ticking along. – Taken from my book The Glorious Ordinary.

The everlasting way. There is but one, we need leading in it. It is the good old way, it does not come to an end; it leads to blessedness without end.” _ CH Spurgeon, The Treasury of David.

  1. Sarah- thank you for the reminder that God knows me so well! Even when I feel Him nudging me to do things out of my comfort zone, He knows what will lead me to the best life for me.

  2. It is hard at times being transparent with God and, definitely, with others as you said. But He is so faithful when we turn to Him in faith and repentance, when necessary! Thanks for hosting. Have a blessed 4th of July!
