How to Avoid Drudgery in Motherhood

When our duties weigh us down, we are tempted to run and hide. Or run away. We dream of the next vacation, but every vacation ends. Our life is not lived like that….our life is lived in teh valley. The valley of habits, routines, and regular bouts with drudgery.

We don’t. Drudgery will happen. Laundry is where I feel the pull towards feelings of menial and dull work. Over and over I wash, dry, fold, and put away the clothes. When does it end? Never. That’s right. Laundry never ends, and so sometimes drudgery and feelings of missing out on this life – but there is a cure: 

Ask God to keep the eyes of your spirit open to the Risen Christ, and it will be impossible for drudgery to damp you.  – March 6

How do we do that? As busy moms, who strive to serve and love well, where do we find the mental energy to open up the Word of God? By now, if you’ve been reading me for awhile you know what I’m going to say: Just start today. Don’t think of what you’ll do tomorrow, just ask yourself: Where/when/how can I read God’s word today? Can I offer some suggestions? 

• Open up a Bible app. Here are a few links: 

• Keep a pocket Bible or some verse cards in your purse for the stop lights and waiting rooms. 

• Spend 5 minutes of your lunch reading your Bible. 

• Listen to praise and worship music whenever you are in the car. 

• Pray. Pray. Pray. (And remember, prayer is just talking to God. Just talk!) 

It doesn’t matter where or how you spend time with God, but it will matter IF you do or not. Drudgery will get the better of us sometimes, but it doesn’t have to dampen your spirits forever.
