HOW TO BE BATTLE READY
Four years ago I walked into the Embassy Suites in Charlotte, NC. It was my very first writer’s conference and I was completely 100% out of my league. Fan struck, I looked around at familiar faces. They were only familiar because I read their words and followed them on social media. The moment I checked into my room, I felt the immediate imposter syndrome settle inside my heart.. Throughout the conference, I definitely felt like a little fish in a HUGE pond.
One morning, I got an invite to a special breakfast because I had participated in a link-up by Kelly Balarie. It was at the breakfast I finally felt like I fit in. Kelly was warm, caring, and a huge encouragement. Not just to me, but every single person she talked to was encouraged. I could tell from their faces and smiles.
When Kelly released her book a few weeks ago, called Battle Ready, I purchased it right away. Meeting Kelly in person at this writer’s conference was the confirmation that there was room at the table for me. So of course I wanted to support my fellow Christian writer!
What’s this book about?
Reading through the book, I realized it was not a regular Christian “how-to” book. Battle Ready is a handbook for anyone looking to renew their mind and live a victorious life in Christ! The book has over 301 tips (so keep a highlighter handy). There is so much truth packed into this book. Each chapter ends with a section to personally apply what Kelly has taught. I’m a hands-on kind of girl, so this was perfect for me.
Each chapter has a special “Warrior Mind Set” we can focus on for each day. The chapters are super easy to read, and provide so much meat! The stories make you say: “me too!!” This book is great if you are looking for a new devotional to use with your Bible reading!
What did I learn?
Battle Ready is a hands-on spiritual plan that teaches you twelve easy-to-implement, confidence-buolidng mind-sets designed to transform your thoughts and, therefore, your life. Each chapter was a great reminder of truth, but my favorite one was the Warrior Mind Set: Five (Humility)
True humility has always been hard for me. I’m naturally a prideful person, so to counteract that I’ve always felt like I had to belittle myself in my mind. My feelings of “not measuring up” and “worthless” played like old records in my head.
What does it mean to live out this humility? I truly struggle with this!
To take the low seat looks like pulling away from your busy day to meet Jesus. It looks like getting into the fines of your bedroom to pry over what He’s calling you to do.
What God has called me to do, isn’t what He has called Kelly to do, or my sister down the street and through the window of my computer screen. Looking at other people’s lives and comparing doesn’t bring anything but discontentment. Instead, Kelly has challenged me to look at everyone and see them through the lens of love.
How do we do that? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
What other things did I love about the book?
The reflection questions throughout the book made it seem like a guidebook, rather than just “This is how you should……” book. AND there are questions for a group study written right there at the end of each chapter. Perfect to do with a group of women!

Who should read this book?
Every single woman. No, really. If you want a book to help fight the lies, doubt, fear, worry, anxiety, or depression in your life, this book is perfect. You will need the armor of God in this life, but Kelly has made it a practical journey to put on the armor of God (just just theoretically). You’ll gain practical wisdom as well as find a cheerleader in the process.
