3 Things to Think About When You Look Back

3 Things to Think About When You Look Back

Stepping into the future with hope means we have found a home in God. It also means we look back and remember all God has done for us.

Our story isn’t over, but by looking at Moses’s story we can take comfort in knowing that ultimately the story isn’t about us.

Record where God has you today. Then look back to where He has already led you. In remembering we can take a step forward. Because when we step into the unknown future, we are stepping hand in hand with a God who is known and has secured our future with Him.

-Excerpt from my new book, I Didn’t Sign Up for This

Looking back can sometimes be harmful. If we dwell too much in the past we might not move forward. We can’t keep replaying conversations, asking God to punish those who have wronged us, or keep thinking about that “one thing” that caused us such heartache. Yes, we need to heal and talk through and work through the things in our past, preferably with a wiser, spiritual leader or friend in our life.

When You Look Back

Dwelling on the past isn’t healthy, but there are some benefits to looking back on our life. I’ve found these three things very helpful to think about when I look back on my life. We can look back and see….

  1. The Great things God has done. I think looking back and recording all of the ways God has shown up for us can be so helpful. As we think back it is easy to focus on the negative, but what if we saw all the goodness God has done in our life? It might take a moment to get started, but we can soon see
  2. That giving thanks shifts our hearts. As we look back and remember what God has done, the next step is to give thanks to God. We can praise Him for His character, but specifically we can give Him praise for all that He has done. His work in our lives deserves our thanks.
  3. The future is in His hands. As we remember how far God has brought us and worked in our life we can give thanks for the present but also find peace and rest in knowing He holds the future. Our God has ordained our steps and nothing is a surprise to Him. His purposes will come to pass and this gives us peace for the future.

How to Rest in God's Goodness When Your Story Shifts

This wasn't part of the plan. The story wasn't supposed to go this way. I didn't sign up for this. If you've ever had these thoughts, chances are that your story shifted in some unexpected way. Perhaps it's even turned totally upside down, and you're wondering how in the world to move forward.

Friend, let God pick you up and show you how to grow through whatever detour, setback, heartache, or disappointment life has thrown at you. Like Moses, you may not have signed up for the path you're on, but God can - and will - see you through it.
