10 Morning Psalms

A few months ago my husband’s job shifted slightly. Instead of being at work at 8am, he had to be at work at 6am. This meant he wanted to go to bed earlier. I am naturally a morning person, so when he started getting up early I would as well.  Changing our routine was forced upon us because of his job, but I have come to love my morning time, which led me to discover 10 morning psalms.

Each day I’m able to get up before my children and spend time just sitting and being still. One of the things I learned early on is that if I took my phone downstairs with me, I was drawn into checking my email and social media. So now I leave my phone charging upstairs in my bedroom and go downstairs to the living room to read, pray, and drink a cup of coffee.

Mornings have become one of my favorite times of the day. Getting up early has so many benefits, and if you are a morning person, you will love this list of the ten best psalms for the morning. I chose these psalms because they are meaningful to me. But they also talk about meeting with God in the morning.

God, of course, does not sleep, but there is something about being human and waking up fresh with thoughts of God and His word on your mind. I confess, my immediate thoughts when getting out of bed aren’t on Him, but forcing myself to develop this habit of getting up early has allowed me to start each day moving my mind, heart, and spirit into a communion with God before beginning my day.

Even during the holiday break I still got up early to spend time with God. My husband will be changing back to 8am starting a week or so from now, but I hope to continue to go to bed early and get up early so that I can have time with God.

10 Morning Psalms
  1. Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

2. Psalm 5:3

My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;
In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up.

3. Psalm 30:5

For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.

4. Psalm 46:5

God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

5. Psalm 55:17

Evening and morning and at noon
I will pray, and cry aloud,
And He shall hear my voice.

6. Psalm 59:16

But I will sing of Your power;
Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;
For You have been my defense
And refuge in the day of my trouble.

7. Psalm 90:14

Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!

8. Psalm 130:5-6

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
And in His word I do hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
More than those who watch for the morning—
Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.

9. Psalm 139:17-18

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You.

10. Psalm 143:8

Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning,
For in You do I trust;
Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,
For I lift up my soul to You.

I pray that you will find joy in the Lord in the morning. That you will meet with Him in those hours before your day begins. He has been up all night watching over you, spending those moments before fully waking up and getting busy with the One who loves you with steadfast love.
