When Your Prayers for Your Husband Feel Unanswered

This week’s guest posts is by Mike & Carlie Kercheval of The Praying Couple®

There are seasons in marriage when prayer feels faithful—but the answers feel distant. Many married women quietly carry this tension: I’m praying. I’m believing. But nothing seems to be changing.

If that resonates with you, we want to begin here—with reassurance that you’re not alone. Praying for your husband is not wasted effort. Scripture makes it clear that when we pray God’s Word—His will—we are heard, even when we are still waiting.

1. The Confidence We Have When We Pray God’s Word

The foundation of biblical prayer is not emotion or urgency—it is alignment.

Scripture tells us plainly:

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

— 1 John 5:14–15 (NIV)

When we pray God’s Word, we are not guessing His will—we are agreeing with it. That truth alone can bring peace to a weary heart. God does not ignore prayers rooted in Scripture. He responds to them in His perfect timing.

2. Why Scripture Matters When You’re Praying for Your Husband

When prayers feel unanswered, it’s often because we’re praying from frustration rather than from truth. That’s understandable—but God’s Word gently re-centers us.

Praying Scripture helps us:

  • Trust God’s timing without losing hope
  • Pray with faith instead of fear
  • Stay rooted in truth rather than disappointment
  • Release control while remaining faithful

God’s Word doesn’t just shape our prayers—it shapes us.

3. What It Looks Like to Pray God’s Word (Practically)

Praying Scripture doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s often as simple as reading God’s promises and turning them into prayers.

Here are a few examples:

For wisdom:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

— James 1:5 (NIV)

Lord, give my husband wisdom today—wisdom that comes from You alone. Amen.

For character and spiritual growth:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

— Galatians 5:22–23 (NIV)

Lord, grow Your Spirit in my husband’s heart in ways I cannot. Amen.

For trust in God’s work:

“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire.”

— Isaiah 55:11 (NIV)

God, I trust that Your Word is working—even when I cannot see it yet. Amen.

4. When God Is Working on You, Too

Sometimes the hardest part of prayer is realizing that God may be transforming us alongside our spouse. This is not punishment—it’s preparation.

God often uses prayer to:

  • Soften our hearts
  • Refine our expectations
  • Strengthen our faith
  • Teach us deeper trust

Praying God’s Word keeps us anchored when growth feels uncomfortable.

5. You Were Never Meant to Pray Alone

Waiting in prayer can feel isolating—but it was never meant to be. Community strengthens perseverance, especially in marriage.

That’s why we created The Marriage Prayer Club™—a space for Christian couples to stay rooted in Scripture and supported in prayer. And for those needing a gentle reset, the 7-Day Marriage Prayer Reset helps refocus prayer on God’s Word rather than discouragement.

We also share encouragement and honest conversations on the The Praying Couple® Podcast for those wanting a deeper relationship with God and each other.

A Prayer for My Heart and My Marriage

Father God,

I come before You with my heart open and honest. You see the places where I feel hopeful and the places where I feel weary. Today, I choose to lay my expectations, frustrations, and fears at Your feet. Teach me to trust You fully—not only with my marriage, but with my own heart.

Help me to pray Your Word with faith and patience. Guard my heart from discouragement while I wait on You. Where I am tempted to control, teach me to surrender. Where I am tempted to lose hope, remind me of Your faithfulness.

Lord, shape my heart to reflect Your love. Fill me with wisdom, grace, and humility as I walk alongside my husband. Even when I do not see immediate change, help me to believe that You are working—both in him and in me.

I place my marriage in Your hands today. I trust Your timing, Your purposes, and Your promises. Strengthen my faith, renew my spirit, and anchor my heart in Your Word as I continue to pray.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
