How to Create a Simple Daily Rhythm of Meeting with God

For a long time, I thought if I just had more time in the morning, I would finally be consistent in my Bible reading. I imagined slow, quiet mornings with my coffee, my Bible open, and no interruptions. And there were seasons when I actually had that kind of time—but if I’m honest, I still wasn’t as consistent as I thought I’d be. Somehow, even with more time, it was easy to put it off or let other things take priority.

Then life shifted, and my mornings became fuller and more limited. Strangely, that’s when I found myself becoming more intentional. With less time, I showed up more often—not perfectly, but more faithfully. It reminded me of something simple but important: consistency isn’t about having the perfect schedule. It’s about showing up, one day at a time.

Over twenty years now I’ve been carving out time in my day to spend with God but I have let go of one very important thing: I have stopped chasing a perfect routine. The perfect routine only stays put for about a week, then life shifts or schedules or life happens – suddenly routines have to shift and my perfect quiet time is uprooted.

Instead, I’ve learned to build a simple rhythm that fits real life.

It starts with the idea of “anytime with God.”  He is not limited to one part of our day. Morning, noon, and night are all opportunities to meet with Him. Of course we are creatures who live in time and the flow of time. So it makes sense that in the morning we start with Him. Then at midday we can pause and pray. And in the evening I’ve found sleep comes better when I rest in His Word.

Instead of a routine with God that feels more like a checklist, what if we developed a rhythm with God? Of course some days will look different and that’s ok. The goal is not perfection but connection.

How to Build a Daily Rhythm with God

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” -Lamentations 3:22-23

Start small.
Start today.
Choose one simple practice for each part of the day and keep it realistic.

We all fear inconsistency and missing out or missing a moment. That doesn’t mean we have to start over, it means we start again. Returning to God is the key!

For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” -Isaiah 30:15

At the heart of it all, this isn’t about checking a box or keeping a perfect routine. It’s about a relationship with our Father. It’s about knowing God, walking with Him, and returning to Him again and again throughout your day.

So if you’ve felt inconsistent, behind, or like you’re starting over—take a deep breath. You’re not failing. You’re being invited.

God is not waiting for you to get it right. He’s not measuring your performance or keeping track of missed days. He is simply inviting you to come—morning, midday, and night. Right where you are. Just as you are.

And every time you do, it matters.
