God Sits With You in the Darkness

December 15, 2016 / Faith

Friend, let me encourage your heart today. It is ok to sit in darkness. If you are reading my Advent reading plan, on Dec. 13 you read Micah 7:8: “Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD will be a light to me.”

I’ve always loved that verse because it acknowledges the darkness. Sometimes we Christians like to offer platitudes to cover over the fact we sometimes find ourselves covered in darkness. “It will pass….” “Trust God….” “Just pray about it….”

I don’t know why you might be feeling the weight of loss or loneliness or sadness. Those words don’t really offer much hope. But let me encourage you with this: it is ok to just sit down and rest. The good news, friend, is you are not sitting alone. God sits with you in the darkness.

And who is this God who sits with you? He not only shines light for you…..“Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not train his ganger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.” Micah 7:18

O, He is a God who “delights in steadfast love.” He might have lead you to the pit, but He doesn’t leave you there. Nor does He delight in your suffering. He delights in love – HIS love for you. And His love is shown through the cross. I always wonder why everything comes back to the cross….but lately I see how the cross leads to LOVE.

When I feel so unlovable, I remember the cross.
When I feel so lonely, I remember the cross.
When I feel so sad, I remember the cross.

God sits with me in the darkness.

This time of year we remember our Christ’s birth, but as I was explaining to my toddler, the baby who was born over 2,000 years ago had to come to die. To save the world with love and the power of steadfast faithfulness….God redeems.

Christ is our light, not only for our salvation, but our daily light as well. If you are feeling worn, weary, and just plain “over” Christmas, let me remind you: God sits with you in the darkness and YOU are so LOVED!
