God is Our Ultimate Joy and Salvation – Psalm 16

Psalm 16

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.

The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names on my lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    or let your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Many scholars agree (according to Acts 2:25-28) this is a Psalm about Jesus Christ, even though David first wrote it about himself. A “michtam” is most commonly known as a “Golden Psalm,” or a “Treasure” we can keep. The word “michtam” is used in several others pslams, and they all seem to depict the psalmist in dire need of help, only to find ultimate joy and salvation in God alone.

Thinking of Jesus as our treasure, we can say with Paul, “nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39) Our ultimate joy and salvation is found in God alone. In the end, no matter what happens to us in this life: heaven awaits. So today take refuge in God alone. God is our ultimate joy and salvation!

As chickens run beneath the hen, so do I betake myself to thee. Thou art my great overshadowing Protector, and I have taken refuge beneath thy strength.” – C.H. Spurgeon

Here is a prayer from Psalm 16. Feel free to print it off and use it this week as you face each day.

O God, my LORD, keep me safe. I will run beneath your strength today. Everything good comes from you, my heavenly Father. I will no longer look to others or other things to keep me safe. In everything, you have become my portion. You are enough for me. In this moment, when I feel so weak, You make me glad. Even though death will come to me, everlasting life awaits for me in heaven, with You. I can have ultimate joy and complete salvation because of your Son, Jesus Christ. Fullness of joy is found in knowing You. Amen.

Blessings!

  1. Hi Sarah!
    I have your book and I can’t wait to start. My problem is I’m in the middle of a Bible study at church on Acts from Kay Arthur. Using the inductive method and it takes a lot of time so it limits me. I have your book on my desk in my craft room and look through it all the time and can’t wait to start. But I have a husband that is 11 years older than me, 78, and since his throat cancer he has gotten weaker even though the cancer is gone so he takes a lot of time but I love him and he’s second below God. I have a bad back so it’s hard for me clean house or take care of the yard and when I mention moving into an apartment it’s a no go. Anyway, I love reading your blogs and I can’t wait till I can start your Bible study. The one at church is too much for me and with yours I can work at my own pace. Thank you Sarah for all you do in the Lord’s name.

    God bless,

  3. Hi Sarah! This psalm is special to me. A few years ago, verse 6 literally came to pass in my life. I am proud to say as verse 5 does that the Lord is my portion and my cup. Thank you for sharing.
