{Part 2} When We Don’t Know the Future

Part 2 of a 4 Part Series entitled The God Who Knows

The God Who Knows My Future

When I think about the physics and mystics, I have to admit I have a Hollywood version whirling around in my mind. The gypsy-like women in golden bangles, long dark hair, beads in the doorway and smoke swirling around a crystal ball.

I did a little real-life research. Did you know the fortune telling industry in the United States was a two billion dollar industry in 2015? With over 80,000 businesses associated with telling the future, I think I can safely say I’m not the only one who wants to know what will happen in the future. It is common to want to know what life will bring, but where are we turning to find comfort?

Even David, in Psalm 139, questions his future. Like David, I agree the future holds much more darkness than light. I can’t see the next step I’ll have to take in faith. I can’t tell you what it will be like next month. Or even next year. We have some BIG things (not even adoption related) happening in our family. It is scary. I mean I would love to know where God is leading us.

God promises to know the future. And although I can’t see the future, and it seems dark and unknown, I know the God who holds the future. David had a lot of “ifs”…..

If I ascend to heaven….
If I make my bed in Sheol….
If I take the wings of the morning…|
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me….”

Even if, God is there.
Even if, God is good.
Even if, God holds me.
Even if, God brings light.

Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,

But the night shines as the day;

The darkness and the light are both alike to You. Psalm 139:12

Even if the darkness of the future is overwhelming, all-consuming, and smothering us, God is still there. The truth breaks through because GOD is the TRUTH. Even the darkness is not dark to God! If you gather nothing from this series, I pray you will hold on to this truth:

Even the darkness is not dark to God.

The darkness will try and hid the light, but God cannot be hidden. When we focus our minds, let our hearts meditate on His Word, light breaks through. I don’t know what you will face tomorrow. I don’t know what will happen later tonight in my own life. I know God says He will hold us. He doesn’t’ just shine a light and leave. He stays. He is close, and near.

David even says God will lead us. Are you afraid of the future because you are afraid to make the wrong choice? I remember when we first started our adoption journey almost three and half years ago. I remember realizing we would have to say “no” or “yes” to a child at the end of the paperwork. What if we make the wrong choice?!

The thought kept me awake night after night. Until I realized, God would lead us. He would take us each step of the way. On January 1, 2014 we filled out first adoption form. An application for our agency. I didn’t know each step, each piece of paper, each signature, God was directing. I couldn’t see it – but God lead us straight to our daughter. Even when I doubted, and was plagued with worry, God comforted me with this truth:

If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Even there Your hand shall lead me,

And Your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139:9-10

Don’t worry friend. You don’t need a psychic to tell you the future. God will lead you. Take comfort in knowing God knows your future. Bring your fear, anger, battles, loss, and your future to the God of the future. He will be there to guide you.

O God who sees my future, let me take comfort today knowing you hold it all in your hands. The good, the bad, and the hard. Let me rest in YOU today. Amen.

  1. Sarah- thank you for this reminder, God is with us in everything. My mind likes to play the “what-if” game often. 🙂
God has me in the palm of His hand and He will lead me and give me strength for the journey!

  2. It’s so true that we want to know what the future holds. Sometimes I think, if God showed us too much, He knows we’d have too many doubts, so He tells us what we need to know when we need to know it … always enough to get us to the next step. Blessings and thanks for hosting!
