How to Get It All Done in the Busy Season

Lately, I’ve had a lot of people ask me how I “get it all done.” First of all, I don’t. I don’t do “it all.” But I know what they mean: how do I do everything I do? I’m a homeschooling momma, with two in Christian school this year, a special-need’s daughter and a tiny-two-year old who is literally the definition of a “hot mess.” I work in several areas of my local church. I run this blog, develop and create brand new products every season, not to mention cultivating friendships, leading a Bible study in my home, and then comes writing a book. Yes. I’m writing another book!

How do I do all of this? For me, I have three words I keep in mind during this busy season:

  1. Organization.
  2. Flexibility.
  3. Eighty.

A few years ago I ran across Lara Casey and her shop, Cultivate What Matters. Immediately I was drawn into her story, her life, and her products. I purchased her PowerSheets and got to work. It was through her amazing tool I discovered these three key aspects to cultivating growth during the busy seasons.

The PowerSheets let me organize my goals, create steps to reach my goals, and with daily, weekly, and monthly checklists, I was able to keep my ideas, plans, activities, and goals all on track.  Organization – all in one place was the first step to being productive. It wasn’t hard for me, and I really enjoyed categorizing my life. I especially loved how she encouraged lists, brainstorming, and writing down monthly, weekly, and daily goals.

Every three months, in the yearly PowerSheet workbook, were check-ins. I revisited my goals. Sometimes I would rewrite them, noting the little (or no progress). Sometimes I would scrap the goal altogether because I found it wasn’t the right time, or I wanted a differently-worded goal. Each time though, I would look through my 10-12 goals and find that I had made progress in about 70% of my goals. Being flexible, but also seeing progress was a treasured gift!

Finally, one phrase that you have to ask yourself for each goal is: will this matter when I’m 80? I first read that question and WOW. It was struck with the reality: the minute turn to hours which turn to days and that makes up a life. At eight years old, will it matter if I ______? It was a great way to see what was important and keep eternity in my mind.

During my busy season, PowerSheets is the simple answer of how I do it all. I really have attributed my book, The Glorious Ordinary, and all of the products I’ve created this year to Lara Casey’s amazing workbook. It is worth EVERY. SINGLE. PENNY.
