How to Flourish In the Midst of Change

How to Flourish In the Midst of Change

A few months ago, my sweet friend, hair stylist and photographer, came to our house to snap some photos of our littles. She took this amazing picture of the window behind my sink. I don’t think she knew the window was one of my favorite places in the house, but I LOVE this picture:

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t love washing dishes, but I do love looking outside if I have to soak my hands in soapy water. And to make it prettier, I’ve placed these bright and colorful plants in this cute window sill.  I’m honestly surprised they are still alive. I’m not a green-thumbed gal at all. My husband probably waters them when I’m not looking. He’s our garden guy.

We like to joke that I’m the city girl and he’s the country guy. Its true, to an extent. But what I do found that I love is this: watching things grow. I love when my children learn things. I love seeing young women who I’ve seen in youth group grow up to be followers of Jesus.

Flourishing means to thrive. I’ll admit, thriving in my relationship with God hasn’t alway come so easily. Recently I found myself in a slump. I couldn’t hear His voice. The words on the pages of scripture blurred together, making no sense. I struggled to even describe it as “growing….”

You know, dear friend, what I think about growth in the dark. So let me encourage you: you can flourish in the dark, the growth will just be hidden at first. I would have never used the word “flourish” to describe what my heart went through two and half years ago. Looking back, I realized God did so much work underneath the soil, I’m seeing the blooms today.

I’m stepping back into a season of difficult next year. I’ll be saying lots of goodbyes.  I’ll be missing and grieving a lot. But flourishing can happen even during the seasons of change. I’ve been encouraged to savor the change this year. I think it is the hardest thing to do – change. But change has to happen for growth, doesn’t it?

Isn’t that what this Christian walk is about: learning to trust God, no matter what He allows or directs to come into our lives? How my faith will be strengthen through truth from His word. How hard it is to trust during seasons of change!?

Recently I was invited to be a part of an encouraging online conference that is helping to equip women just like you to flourish in your faith, family and life.

The conference features remarkable women from all over the country who have encountered many of life’s challenges and I was excited to share about studying God’s Word in your everyday life. 1. Hi Sarah, Happy Tuesday! What a lovely post about flourishing. I’ve never really considered that we grow even in the datk, beneath the soil. What a wonderful realization! And I’m so happy that you get to look out if that lovely window, my friend. I would just love it, too! Have a blessed day and thanks for hosting. :o)

  2. Hi Sarah, i enjoyed your conference so much that I wanted to visit your website.
Thank you for your lovely words. I just love the way you see God’s blessing in every detail of our life: We flourish in the dark and God was already with us underneath the soil.
    We are never alone!
Thank you and may God always bless you and your family.

  3. Yes, change can be oh so difficult but knowing our God is in charge and he has every one of you in the palm of his hand can bring comfort. I am praying for you and your family as you embark on a new journey.

Your words spoke to me today about God working under the surface. I usually do find growth with God comes easy, but lately, it feels difficult and a bit distance. I have been beating myself up instead of just resting with him and knowing we are good. He loveds me and is always working. Thank you for your words today.

  4. Thank you for reminding us that we can flourish in the dark. Your words also bring to mind the words of great preacher who taught that people can think that we have been buried because of our dismal circumstances but God has planted us and we will rise and flourish again.
