By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command. (Heb. 11:23)
This verse says Moses’s mother and father both had faith enough to keep the baby alive. This is the only verse that gives us a glimpse into Moses’s parents’ belief. They saw he was beautiful. God somehow had whispered to their hearts, “Keep this child alive.” We can speculate as to what “he was a beautiful child” means, but in the end it came down to faith. Hebrews says, “they were not afraid of the king’s command.” Jochebed had no idea how her life would turn out, but she knew murder was wrong and this child deserved to live.
The Nile River was supposed to be a life-giving river. With its waters, the crops grew and the people were fed. For centuries, it had kept people alive. Now, it would take the lives of the Hebrew baby boys. And so Jochebed hid her baby. In an act of faith she nurtured, loved, and cared for Moses for three months after his birth, keeping his existence a secret. When she couldn’t hide him any longer, she placed him in a basket in the river and walked away, trusting God with whatever would happen next. This was her act of faith: even if fear was present, she still believed God had a purpose. We can’t know why she chose this nor what ultimately she believed would happen. But we know that her faith, according to Hebrews, was not rooted in fear.
Withstand Fear with Faith
When my daughter was placed in my arms, the overwhelming feeling was fear. This was not the little girl everyone had told us about. She wasn’t smiling. She wasn’t standing up. Her skin beneath the four layers of clothing had turned a yellowish color. I was overwhelmed, afraid, and helpless. In those moments, I didn’t need courage to fight my fears—I needed faith. When life shifts and fear rises up, it isn’t wrong to fear, but we can withstand the flood of fear with faith.
What does this faith look like, and how can you cultivate it so that it is present when the hard times hit? Let’s consider how Jochebed’s faith withstood the river of fear. This woman believed God had a purpose for her and her family. When doubt threatened to flood her heart, she made an ark of faith. With her example, you too can find the faith to stand against the river of disappointment, uncertainty, and rearranged plans. When your story shifts, it doesn’t have to shipwreck your faith. As Moses grew up his foundation was found in the legacy left by his mother. What kind of faith did she have? She had a faith rooted in truth. There are four truths we find in scripture that help us fight for our faith each and everyday.
Four Truths to Fight for Your Faith
- God is Creator. God is not just something that happened by chance but a living Being outside of time and space. He created us all.
- God Cares. Our God is not a Creator who left His creation to fend for themselves. He loves us beyond measure.
- God Comforts. The Heavenly Father isn’t sitting on His throne, He has come near through the Person of Jesus and through the Power of the Spirit we have comfort for our suffering.
- God Calls. The God of the universe invites us into a relationship with us. He asks us to join him in communion with Him and prayer is an open invitation to come to God’s throne with our needs.
These truths can anchor our hearts. Read more about our God in Sarah’s new book, I Didn’t Sign Up for This. No matter how your story shifts you can rest in the goodness of God.
