Why Do We Study the Life of Christ?
Why Do We Study the Life of Christ?
For a long time, I’ve done a variety of Bible reading plans. In fact, I have several free reading plans I’ve shared as well. From topical to books of the Bible, reading the Bible with a plan is always better. Recently I have been drawn to reading the four gospels. I’ve also been doing more than reading, I’ve been studying as well. You might ask yourself, “why do we study the life of Christ?”
After going through a couple of really tough years with our family I’ve struggled with something. What happened to our family in July 2022 was in a sense unique and while we were going through it I kept thinking to myself, “No one really understands what we are going through.” It was disheartening to suffer and grieve something that wasn’t tangible, but also something that not a lot of people have experienced.
No One Understands Like Jesus
Do you have a grief that feels unique to you? Or maybe the grief isn’t unique, but no one in your immediate family or day-to-day life has had the same experience. You might have said, “No one understands…” One day as I was thinking about that phrase, my friend sent me this song. The singer of this song took the theme from this old hymn, and it is beautiful. The old hymn’s lyrics are:
Chorus
No one ever cared for me like Jesus;
There’s no other friend so kind as He.
No one else could take the sin and darkness from me;
O how much He cared for me.
I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus,
Since I found in Him a friend so strong and true.
I would tell you how He changed my life completely;
He did something no other friend could do.
No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus by Charles Weigle
It was through this song that I learned this beautiful truth:
No one really understands but Jesus.
No one really understands like Jesus.
Our Savior, Jesus Christ, not only is the one who truly understands everything we go through, He is also the one who can really, deeply understand it in such a way that brings such comfort. I began to realize that Jesus understood every emotion I was having, and not only that, but He was also there to comfort me.
After this I began to read the Gospels again. I read through the life of Christ and began to study what it meant in Hebrews when it says:
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16
So why do we study the life of Christ?
For me it connects me to the work of the Gospel, speaks to me in my suffering, and draws me closer to Jesus Christ, whom I am to imitate. If the Christian’s life is to grow to be more like Christ, then it would benefit our hearts to study His life. Will you join me?
I’m working on a course that will take all four Gospels and give you a starting point in studying the life of Christ. It will hopefully be ready by the end of this year or early next year.
