Exodus is one of those sweeping dramas that pull us into the narrative, but as the book ends we find it difficult to keep reading. After reading the Ten Commandments in chapter 20, we struggle to keep going. As Moses receives the commandments from God, he also receives instructions for how to build the tabernacle and the various laws.
Exodus is packed full of fantastic events, amazing wonders, great victories, and the pinnacle of the salvation story for the Israelites. From slavery to freedom, from the wilderness to the edge of the Promised Land, reading Exodus feels like an adventure.
What I love about Exodus is the main character, Moses. I love him so much I wrote a book about him! Moses’ life isn’t perfect, but it shows us the perfection, protection, and provision of God.

I love that we see God show up in all of these impossible situations. Written by Moses, it’s the second book of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. It logically follows the end of Genesis. If you can, read the last few chapters of Genesis to get some context of Exodus 1.
Although it would be easy to skim through the first few chapters of Exodus, I would encourage you to slow down and really digest the beginning of Moses’ story. Before the famous burning bush encounter, Moses had a storied past.
Moses’ rise to the great leader he became took time and his story is so much like our story. Moses’ story also parallels the story of the nation of Israel. I love this overview given by the Bible Project.
God rescues the people of Israel from Egypt and invites them into an agreement, or covenant, with him. The people damage their relationship with God, which causes God to recommit to his promise to dwell with them.
That is the story of Moses and that is our story as well. As you read through Exodus, remember that the God of the Old Testament is exactly the same God we have today. God’s provision for the Israelites is something that is also available to us. The protection God provides the people as they cross the Red Sea is the same protection we have as Jesus is our Shepherd. God’s plan was never thwarted.
God is the same!
I encourage you to check out my book as I take the story of Moses and relate it to my own story but also yours. You can get it here.
