The Importance of Writing Scripture

The Importance of Writing Scripture

A few years ago I had surgery on my left wrist. I had a cyst that was causing pain when I played the piano, wrote, or even typed. It was hard to lift things. After having it removed, I struggled to maneuver. It was several weeks before I could play the piano and type. Thankfully I am right handed and could still write. So I did a lot of handwriting during that time.

One of the things I had done back when my kids were little was write out scripture everyday. I would use these journals to write the word. At the time I used them because the journals would give you the scripture to use and a beautiful journal to open each day. As a writer, I love a good journal!

Today I still write scripture, but it looks different. I write it in my regular journal. I pick scripture that has impacted me at the time. I write whole portions of passages to single verses. Writing scripture is such a beautiful practice I hope to do even more of in the future. I’ve found three benefits to writing scripture:

  1. It slows us down to really understand what we are reading.
  2. Helps us see the small things.
  3. Doesn’t take a lot of time.

If you want to get started, you can take these 7 tips here as a guideline.

Writing Scripture is Invaluable

Overtime I continued this practice so that today I can confidently say that writing scripture is invaluable. Throughout church history, copying scripture was a way of persevering it, but I cannot even begin to express how writing out large portions of scripture has changed my perspective.

This past winter I wrote out the entire book of 1 Peter. It took me a couple of months but I enjoyed it. It helped me see the big picture of Peter’s letter to the churches. I’ll probably begin to write out large portions again this fall. I’m doing a deep dive into Hebrews so I’ll probably start there.

With scripture writing it doesn’t matter if you understand every single thing. In fact, I find that when I slow down and notice the small details I have more questions about the passage. But that’s ok!

Our Heads and Our Hearts

The importance of writing scripture is that we get it into our heads and hearts together. The beautiful thing about God’s Word is that we will never plunge the depths of understanding it all completely. The truth is – we can keep doing deeper and never reach the bottom. Writing it out reminds us that there are truths there and helps us see some we might have missed simply by reading.

I do have two resources for you. I have this journal (on sale!) with suggested scripture and printable pages for you to start writing scripture. I also have these free plans with suggested Bible verses on various topics to use in your own journal!
