How to Turn Scripture Into Prayer
Welcome to Five Minute Devotionals!  A time to grab your coffee (or tea) and sit for five minutes, read Scripture, and spend a few minutes in prayer! I’ve made it easy for you this morning. Simply jot down the questions below in your journal, or print off the attached PDF of today’s devotional to do in your free time today.Â
It is about our daily life in the Word. Jesus is ready to meet us here. If you have five minutes to scroll through Facebook, you have five minutes to spend in the Word!
Dear Lord, I pray you will guide our minds and hearts for even the next few minutes. Draw us close to You. As we open your Word, let the Holy Spirit guide us to truth. Amen.
Let’s talk about……
turning Scripture into prayer.Â
For the past month, I’ve been so encouraged by a sweet friend, Ruthie with her “Couch to Knee” challenge. She walked us through the various aspects of prayer (Praise, Confession, Supplication, and Intercession). Then she shared how she created a prayer journal.
If you would like to start a prayer journal, you don’t have to be fancy! I just used these scripture cards and a simple journal with blank pages. After I created lists of prayer requests, I began writing out scripture into prayers to God. It is super easy to do, and I’ll demonstrate how I did it below.
Three Steps for Turning Scripture Into Prayer
1. Pick Your Passage. It would be helpful to start by picking a relatively short and familiar passage of the Bible. Don’t pick a brand new verse you’ve never studied. Make sure you understand the context and meaning of the verse. Even if it means reading the context first.
2. Read Your Passage. I would suggest reading over your passage several times, especially aloud. Read the passage in various translations and even paraphrases as well. This will give you ideas for different words you can use in your prayer.
3. Pray Your Passage. Begin like you would a normal prayer. (Dear Father, Dear Jesus, Oh Lord, etc.) If you are writing out your prayer, treat it like writing a letter. Answer the following question: What command do I see? Ask God for help in obedience. What aspects of God’s character are revealed?  Praise Him for Who He is. What is God doing? Give Him thanks for His good works. What sin does it reveal in your heart? Confess it in your prayer.
Now its your turn.
