Three Places You Can Start Reading the Bible – TODAY
Sometimes starting is the hardest part. When I wanted to run a 5k a few years ago, I started out by walking. It seemed counterintuitive to start running by walking. But I needed to warm up to a 5k. I did that by walking. Then I began walking and running intervals. Just a few minutes here and a few minutes there.
After just six weeks I was running for twenty minutes without stopping or getting too tired. I was training my body. Then I realized it was my mind that needed training too. As I ran longer and longer distances, my mind had to be convinced I could do more and more.
After completing the program, I was able to run a 5k with no problems! I also went on to run a 10k as well. It all started with walking. It has been several years since I did the training, and I’m ashamed to admit I don’t run (or walk for that matter) very much at all anymore.
In 2017 I’m vowing to get back to running. But I know I will need to start out with walking, at least for a little while. My body and mind need to train again.
Maybe you feel like this with your Bible reading. Maybe reading God’s word was something you used to do, but life and circumstances have robbed you of this daily habit. Maybe you’ve switched shifts or jobs or just hit a hard place in your life and you just don’t feel like reading.
Let me encourage you to start today. Don’t make it a goal to read through the Bible in a year if its been several years since you cracked it open. It would be like me running a 5k the second week of training.
Start today and don’t worry about the end result. You might eventually be able to read your Bible everyday and then read through the entire Bible in a year, but I think today you can just start small. The three best places you can start are with these three books of the Bible.
Genesis. The book of beginnings would be a great place to start. This book is filled with stories that will keep you interested!
Psalms. The book of Psalms is a book of songs. It love reading Psalms. It is actually the book I am focusing on in my personal devotions in 2017.
The Gospel of John. I love this gospel. John is said to be like a pool that is deep enough for an elephant to swim and a child to wade. It is both deep and clear. Simple and profound. It is great place to start as you discover who Jesus is.
If you are struggling with finding a way to start praying and reading your Bible, I can help you! I have created a special Bible reading plan JUST FOR YOU! Visiting from Testimony Tuesday today. I think too often we miss Bible reading for just that reason, that we gone off-track on a big major plan. We can make it too complicated sometimes. You’ve listed some great ways to get started. And I love that idea of training – I hadn’t thought about it in terms of Bible study before. But it’s true. We don’t have to feel like we’re supposed to jump in with hour long sessions surrounded by commentaries and study guides, though those are great at times. I’ve said sometimes that the best Bible reading plan is one you will actually use.
Great advice, Sarah! Hope your new year is off to a good start! Blessings!
I find myself going back to John time and time again! I try to read a Psalm or a portion of a Psalm every day ~ helps keep me focused on praising God.
