How the Bible Really Does Help Us Make Decisions

How the Bible Really Does Help Us Make Decisions

Your word is a lamp to my feet

And a light to my path. Psalm 119:105

When I was younger I memorized this verse because it was part of a class for church.  Today I’ve kept this verse close to my heart because life gets a little dark sometimes, doesn’t it? I need a lamp. The next step isn’t always clear. What if you have two choices and both are “good choices”? The questions we often face have nothing to do with right and wrong. If we are Christians, God has promised to guide us each step.

What does this look like, practically speaking? What do you need today? When I need to make a decision I’ve come up with this three step process. I love a checklist – and so I hope this helps.

Three Steps to Do Before Making a Decision

Step One: Pray. This might seem simple, but I think it is the most powerful thing we can do before we take a step. I stop and pray, asking God for two things: Wisdom and Peace. I want wisdom from Him (James 1:5) and I want peace from Him (Philippians 4:8). God has promised both to me. So those are the two things I have

Step Two: Seek Scripture. I keep reading my Bible, studying the Bible, and looking at passages that might relate to what I need to do.

Step Three: This is a two-for-one step. I make a decision and trust. Many times I will avoid making a decision because I’m afraid of either making the wrong choice or because I’m afraid of what will happen when I do decide. So I’ve found that making the decision AND trusting God are the last steps.

I trust that if I am doing steps one and two, God will help me make the right choice. And if I happen to NOT make the right decision, the promise of Romans 8:28 is for me!

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

I heard a podcaster say God’s light is a light for a path, not a football field. God rarely reveals the big picture of what our life will look like. Instead, He gives us exactly what we need when we need it. A light for right now.

The Bible is a lamp for the path.
