The Most Dangerous Place to Live (And Its Not What You Think)

the-most-dangerous-place-to-live-devotional-the-unknown-god-is-there

I will never go skydiving.  I can honestly say I will never – on-purpose jump – out of an airplane. No way will you get a backpack parachute around my body and I will not voluntarily feel the wind rush around my hair as I am pushed out the open door thousands of feet in the air.  Its not because I’m afraid of heights. Heights don’t really bother me. It isn’t because I’m afraid of dying so much. (Although that is a real concern.) It isn’t that I wouldn’t trust the instructors or the equipment. Its the fear of the unknown. Its the fear of being out of control and just falling.

Falling and failing are the same for me. Synonyms. To fall means to fail. I like to do things right. I like to think I have things under control, but the rug keeps getting slipped out from under me. You think I would learn.

Falling is something I don’t like because I can’t control it. The uncharted is not for me. Which is kind of funny, because the unfamiliar is where God keeps calling me. He asked us to step out in adoption. He asked me to step out and write my story. He is asking us to step out again and again – and here I am: still afraid.

The unknown was always the most dangerous place for me. Even as a child, I hated the deep end of the pool. I didn’t like swimming far out into the waves at the beach. I was scared of the dark. The career I choose (teacher) instead of the one I wanted (writer) was all based on the fact that I felt safe choosing what I knew.

So I’m still learning this truth:

We talk as if it were the most precarious thing to live the sanctified life; it is the most secure thing; it is the most secure thing, because it has Almighty God is in and behind it. The most precarious thing is to try and live without God.

– Chambers

The unknown is sometimes where God calls us because He is there. Don’t miss that: The known God is found in the unknown circumstances. I’ve found God more clearly and seen His hand more confidently and felt His presence more strongly in the circumstances where I wasn’t in control.

So friend, let Him be found in the areas of your life where it feels like you are out of control.

In your heartache over relationships gone so terribly wrong….find the faithful Father.
In your health taking a turn for the worse….discover He is the healer of more than your body.
In your waiting season….let Him be your portion and satisfaction.
In the financial struggles….allow Him to provide your needs in miraculous ways.
In the moments of heartache….give thanks for the good still found in the mess.

There is good there because there is a Good Father. The most dangerous place to live is out of His will. The Almighty God is found in your unknowns. Find Him and you will find security. It doesn’t have to feel good to be good. Remember that this year. God is good, even in the hard.

Blessings!

  1. We memorize Romans 8:28 and in our minds we know that God is good and can, therefore, bring good out of the inexplicable. It’s so hard to communicate this truth without making it sound like a band aid. But you have beautifully put the goodness of God on display here in this post. Thank you!

  2. “let Him be found in the areas of your life where it feels like you are out of control.” Well said. I feel like I’m drowning in to-do lists and it’s only the 3rd day of the year! I definitely need release control.
    Happy Tuesday!
