Getting Ready for Advent – A New Advent Study is Coming! 

My children love to have a nightlight. All five of them at some point while they were little wanted a nightlight. My three youngest still like them! While we were living with my parents after suddenly moving back from Central America, my girls shared a room without a nightlight. So each night the oldest would ask if she could crack the door. All she needed was a little light. 

Don’t we all love just a little light? I’ll admit I love to sleep in complete darkness. My husband and I both get bothered by any beam of light shining into our room. I’ll never forget once living in a house where a street light always shone in our room. One night we noticed it was darker than normal. Turns out the street light was burned out – we were thrilled! 

In my life, there have been several seasons where I’ve walked without a light in my heart. During those times I felt weary and tired because there seemed to be no hope in my heart. One of my favorite Christmas albums is Bebo Norman’s. One of the songs is “Great Light of the World.” In it, he sings about how our world can feel so dark, desperate, and alone. The darkness of it all makes us afraid. Sin has a way of creating shame, guilt, and pain – bringing only darkness. 

During the holiday season, may we not forget that Jesus – the Great Light of the World – has come! He has brought light, life, and hope to a world covered in darkness. Jesus claimed to be the Light of the World. May we remember to look to Jesus this Christmas season. 

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” John 1:4
